Kentucky Law Update

KLU season is well underway, and we’ve loved seeing you in Owensboro, Covington, Ashland, London and Paducah. We look forward to being in Lexington (10/24), Pikeville (11/14), Bowling Green (11/21) and Louisville (12/5) in the coming weeks. Along with Yvette Hourigan of KYLAP and Laura Day DelCotto, of DelCotto Law Group PLLC and Chair of the KBA Well-Being Committee, LMICK is presenting a program on how to ethically and practically “pause” your practice. Over 100 Families Benefitted

Thank you for your generous donations to the Food Pantry of Carroll County. You will recall that in honor of Ruth Baxter’s 30 years of service to the Company, LMICK raised money in her name for the Food Pantry, a local organization impacting her community and in which she is highly involved. With your contributions and LMICK’s, just over $7,200.00 was contributed. Ruth and the Food Pantry are so appreciative. Ruth shared that the Food Pantry spends $72 to feed a family of 4 for a week. Your contributions will feed over 100 families and can sustain the Food Pantry’s work for a month. Ruth described the impact as “tremendous.” While the LMICK match campaign has concluded, you can still donate to the Food Pantry. Send a check to P.O. Box 265, Carrollton, KY 41008 and denote Ruth Baxter in the memo line.

Ruth Baxter served Lawyers Mutual for 30 years and, as a thank you, Lawyers Mutual is raising money on her behalf for the Food Pantry of Carroll County, a local organization impacting her community and in which she is highly involved. You may have noticed the LMICK Minute arrived a day early, this month. Wednesday, June 19th is Juneteenth and the LMICK Offices will be closed in observance of the holiday.

Reminder: CLE Deadline is June 30th!

Kentucky’s deadline for attending CLE’s will be here before you know it. Take some time to log-in and check your progress to ensure you will meet the requirement. Also, make plans to attend the Lawyers Mutual Second Quarter CLE next week for a fun ethics session on “dueling” in Kentucky next week on Tuesday, May 21st.

I consider it an honor and a privilege to write this message each year to share a bit about your Company, Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company of Kentucky (LMICK). I often think of lawyers as superheroes – and in many ways they are just that as they pull off amazing feats to help a plaintiff with serious injuries; defend a corporation against “bet the farm” litigation; secure a not guilty verdict for a wrongly accused criminal defendant; and on and on. In this job, I am reminded, however, that these superheroes are not infallible. Yes, Virginia, lawyers do make mistakes and when they do LMICK is always ready to assist you.

LMICK would like to congratulate Kentucky’s (soon to be) newest attorneys! The swearing in ceremony is set for April 25, 2024 in Frankfort. If you have a newly admitted attorney joining your practice, remember to add them to your policy by filling out this Add an Attorney form on our website.

Proposed Rule Amendment: Comments Accepted Until April 15, 2024

The Kentucky Rules of Evidence Rules Review Commission has recommended adoption of proposed amendments to KRE 506 (Counselor-client privilege) and KRE 702 (Testimony by experts).
