News & Updates

Donations are still being accepted in honor of Ruth Baxter’s service to LMICK

Ruth Baxter served Lawyers Mutual for 30 years and, as a thank you, Lawyers Mutual is raising money on her behalf for the Food Pantry of Carroll County, a local organization impacting her community and in which she is highly involved. LMICK plans to match up to $5,000 in donations made in her honor. If you wish to make a donation to the Food Pantry of Carroll County, send a check to P.O. Box 265, Carrollton, KY 41008 and denote Ruth Baxter in the memo line.

Thanks to departing staff members!

This summer brings changes in our staff and we want to pause to acknowledge their contributions to the LMICK team.

  • Courtney Risk, Education & Engagement Specialist, is leaving Lawyers Mutual on August 2nd to pursue her own training and consulting business.
  • Madelyn Day, recent University of Kentucky Law grad, wrapped up her internship as she studied for the bar. We wish her the best on the bar exam later this month!
  • Mia Osborne completed her accounting internship in the spring and transitioned to her next internship with Yum! Brands.

We thank all three and wish them the best in their next chapters!

Lawyer Well-Being

A Note From Courtney: The Impermanence of Life

“The guideline of Aparigraha invites us to let go and to pack lightly for our journey through life, all the while caring deeply and enjoying fully.... And yet, [we try] all different ways we can think of to find some kind of permanence, something to hold on to. But the nature of the realm of Aparigraha is impermanence. Everything changes. Nothing stays the same. If we can fall back to the breath and watch the belly rise and fall with each inhalation and exhalation, we can feel the truth of the transience of all things.”

--Deborah Adele, The Yamas and Niyamas

As I write my last LMICK Minute—and my last Lawyer Well-Being note—I keep coming back to one of my favorite quotes about the beauty of life’s impermanence. Many of you may know I rediscovered my yoga practice after breaking my leg in 2021. We lawyers love a good credential—so when I wanted to understand the practice more, I enrolled in a yoga teacher training (with no intention of ever teaching yoga).

The quote above was an “Ah-ha!” moment for me. So many of my moments of discontent were rooted in my attachment in how things should be or resisting change. As lawyers, we are pre-disposed to trying to fix everything all the time. In our work, it serves us well: spot the issue(s), craft a solution, execute the solution, and celebrate the win. If we carry this over to our personal lives, however, we often struggle, falling into a pattern of focusing on the things we perceive need fixing instead of the things that bring us joy, peace, love, hope. For me, shifting a framework that appreciates the fluidity of life is slowly bringing more joy, peace, love, and hope into my life.

With this appreciation, I now close my chapter with Lawyers Mutual. Despite the tone of this note, my transition is not some Eat, Pray, Love moment. I started my legal career hanging my own shingle and I have had something tugging at me to return to entrepreneurship for a few years. After dipping my toe into occasional yoga teaching earlier this year, it became clear that I was finally ready to take the leap into opening and running my own training and consulting business full-time, combining my legal background and passion for well-being.

I want to thank the LMICK Board and the staff for the opportunity to step into this newly created role and run with it. I have learned so much from this experience—and I have certainly “car[ed] deeply and enjoy[ed] fully.” I will always be an advocate for the mission of Lawyers Mutual because of this.

I also want to thank you, the insureds, for the support and feedback along the way. I have had so much fun getting to know you and look forward to staying connected in my next chapter. The goodbye may be bittersweet, but I look forward to good things on the horizon for Lawyers Mutual.
